Senior Project
My Senior Show will be this Friday, April 27th at The Art Space in Willamantic, CT. For my Senior Project, I chose to design and illustrate the book covers of classic novels. Each was sketched out and painted digitally on Photoshop CS5. When designing these book covers, I took the time to consider the characters and the worlds they lived in. The feeling I took with every book helped me make my color choices in combination with the font and design choices.
Sherlock Holmes; The Hound of the Baskervilles. Digital. 24X36.
The Great Gatsby. Digital. 24X36.
Twenty-Thousand Leagues Under The Sea. Digital. 24X36.
The Wizard of Oz. Digital. 24X36.
Usually when receiving a commission for a book cover, the artist is not asked to illustrate the back. So for the show I decided to simply design each back of the book including the spine, print them, and glue them to a blank-paged book block (which I also cut). I added the synopsis of the book and a brief biography of the author. On a few of them, like Sherlock, I described a quirky trait that the author had in his lifetime. Hopefully some people took the time to read them!
These are just a few examples of them. I'll be positing pictures of where they will be at my show. Keep tuned in!

The Metamorphosis book cover

This is actually a work in progress, because I still want to go back in and detail the borders. The cast shadow is giving me trouble, because it feels too empty and isolated to me. I feel like it needs blues or purples. Or something to give it an extra edge. Anyways, I will upload the finish product in a few days from now!

Commissions, Current Projects, ect.
I have a very dusty blog! New semester, and here are some new things. A portrait of Master Chief :). In honor of my boyfriends birthday, since his favorite game is Halo~*. The background needs a some work and I'd like to focus more on his armor so that it seems realistic. Also, I am planning to paint something in the reflection of his face mask... any ideas?
Here is a commission I did for a family friend. He had a very interesting request. He wanted Goofy, Albert Einstein, and Thomas Edison tubing down a river. The title on the tube was "Stay Focused'. He said he wanted to look at something that inspired him every day, not to mention his favorite historical figures and cartoon characters. It was a cute project, good times painting it. I had trouble contrasting the sky with the figures, and stll need to work on color. Practice practice practice.
I am taking Aqua Media this semester, and I really love it. I haven't had the opportunity of learning watercolor until now, and I have a feeling it is going to be my next favorite thing. Some neat projects on the way, I'll update more on that next week. Til then!
